Henry Ford's assembly line, implemented in 1913 at his Highland Park, Michigan factory, revolutionized the manufacturing process by breaking down the assembly of a car into individual tasks, each performed by a different worker. This allowed for much faster and more efficient production, as the cars moved through the factory on a conveyor belt and workers simply had to perform their designated task on each car as it passed by. This greatly increased the speed of production and reduced costs, making cars much more affordable for the average consumer.
The assembly line also led to a culture of consumerism in several ways. Firstly, by making cars more affordable, it greatly increased their accessibility to a wider range of people, leading to a significant increase in car ownership and consumption. Additionally, the assembly line allowed for mass production on a scale never before seen, leading to a surge in consumer goods and encouraging the development of new consumer markets. Finally, the assembly line also led to an increase in consumer spending, as people were now able to afford to buy more goods and services.
