x + y = 7 → (1)

6x - y = 0 → (2)

adding the 2 equations, term by term will eliminate y

(x + 6x) + (y - y) = 7 + 0

7x + 0 = 7

7x = 7 ( divide both sides by 7 )

x = 1

substitute x = 1 into (1) and solve for y

1 + y = 7 ( subtract 1 from both sides )

y = 6

the solution is x = 1 , y = 6
