To make a 1:10 dilution of a substrate with a final volume of 20 ml, we need to add 2 ml of the substrate to 18 ml of water.

To answer this question, we can use the following formula:

Initial concentration * Initial volume = Final concentration * Final volume

We know the following:

Initial concentration = 1 (since we are making a 1:10 dilution)

Final concentration = 0.1 (since we are diluting by a factor of 10)

Final volume = 20ml

We need to solve for the initial volume (the amount of substrate we need to add to the water).

Initial volume = Final concentration * Final volume / Initial concentration

Initial volume = 0.1 * 20ml / 1

Initial volume = 2ml
