If you were a Russian prince under the control of the Mongol khans, why would you be willing to pay a tribute to the khans?

Mongols excelled in cavalry and hit and run tactics, their horses were the driving force behind their conquests. The Mongol horse was a lot more smaller and agile, and they used bows and arrows, to pick off enemies at a distance. Typically the more distance you have between your enemy, in a combat scenario, the higher the odds of you surviving. They would swoop down from the steppes, and circle and confuse their enemies, and butcher them later on.
