Jail overcrowding can occur due to several reasons such as excess of pre-trial detentions, harsh sentences for offenders, using jail for even minor crimes or petty offenses, waiting for new laws to be established for crimes, and spending more time in jail due to the truth being revealed in a long time. The consequences of jail overcrowding are poor health as the risk of infection increases when a place is crowded and the inmates get transmitted equally with the infection. The risk of infection increases due to the poor sanitation practices followed by people when the resources are limited as well as the negligence of people taking care of health and hygiene in the jails. Lack of privacy also leads to increased violence, increased chances of su*cide, and exacerbation of mental health problems. Overcrowding can have a negative impact on treatment programs as well as rehabilitation because the people residing in jails are not able to come out of the trauma. There are many strong inmates who might bully the weaker ones and provoke them to either commit su*cide or become more violent. Overcrowding can be prevented by not using jails for petty crimes. Instead, penalties can be imposed so that a person thinks before they act again in that way. Better infrastructure facilities can be built because every human being has the right to live with dignity. Open jails can also work wherein people are allowed to work in open areas during the daytime and are allowed to reside in jail at night. However, this should be done only for people who are not involved in heinous crimes. Health facilities can also be improved with regular health screenings and better treatment facilities and the inclusion of psychological counseling. People can also be provided with some skills which can help them to integrate with society when they have served the sentence as it can relieve them of mental pressure.
