Water will move from part A to part B till equilibrium is reached
The student's experimental setup involves a semipermeable membrane that is permeable to water but not to the solute. Water will flow from A to B until balance is established. It is assumed that a selectively permeable membrane will allow water but not solute to pass through it.
As a result, water from the higher concentration region will begin to move towards the lower concentration region, i.e. from side A to side B. This transfer process will continue until the concentration of water on both sides equalizes or until equilibrium is established.
A student put together the experimental set-up shown below. The selectively permeable membrane is permeable to water, but not to the solute shown.
Look at Figure 7-10. Describe the movement of water in the experimental set-up. What will happen to the concentration of water over time?
