By applying direct proportion to the given information, we have the following mathematical equation:

9/2 square yards = 3 gallons of paint

1 square yard = x gallons of paint

By cross-multiplying, we have the following;

9x/2 = 3

9x = 6

x = 6/9

x = 2/3 gallon of paint.
