It is to be noted that the rule from the vowel team chart that applies to the words "main" and "wait" is "Vowel Diagraph" (Option B)

When two vowels work together to form a new sound, the result is a vowel digraph.

These words—ai, ay, ee, ea, ie, ei, oo, ou, oe, ue, ey, ay, oy, oi, au—are taught as the vowel- vowel spelling pattern in Scholar Within's spelling curriculum because thetwo vowels combine to form a single sound.

For instance, the separate /b/ and /r/ sounds are still audible in the "br" mix of the word brag.

This is not the same as a digraph. A digraph is a pair of letters that stand for asingle phoneme, or sound.

Although there are vowel and consonant digraphs, we'll concentrate on consonant digraphs in this article.
