Data

32 black squares

32 red squares

Total number of squares = 32 + 32 = 64

a) Total area = ?

Area of a square = side x side

length of each square = 1 unit

Area = 8 x 8 = 64 u2

because square root of 64 = 8

b) The length of the chekerboard is 8 units

c) Because the figure is a square and on a square all its sides measure the same, so look for a number that multiply by itself gives 64. This number is 8.

8 x 8 = 64.
