subtract the 2 equations like you subtract pure numbers from each other.

5x + 2y = 12

3x + 2y = 8

5x - 3x +2y - 2y = 12 - 8

2x = 4

x = 2

alternatively...

3x + 2y = 8

5x + 2y = 12

-2x = -4

x = 2.
