Now we have

21x + 28y = 280 ____(3)

21x + 24y = 255 ____(4)

subtract (3) from (4)

28y - 24y = 280 - 255

4y = 25

y = 6.25

substitute y = 6.25 in (1)

3x + 4(6.25) = 40

3x + 25 = 40

3x = 15

x = 5

Hence, the values of x and y are 6.25 and 5 respectively.
