Greek city-states were strategically located in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea in order to allow them trade easily with other and engage in communication and the exchange of ideas.
This position of the Greek city-states play a role in development of the ancient Greek civilization. The city-states such as Athens, Sparta, Corinth were located along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This facilitated trade, cultural exchange and maritime activities that were important to the Greek society.
The Mediterranean Sea provided the Greek city-states with access to vital sea routes connecting them to other civilizations in the Mediterranean basin such as Egypt, Phoenicia etc.
