Aaron went shopping for a new camera because of a sale. The store was offering a 10% discount. If the price on the tag was $27, what would be the price after the discount but before tax, to the nearest dollar and cent?

Answer:

$24.30

Explanation:

You can do this two ways! One way to do this is to transform the 10% into decimal form. So, move the decimal over to the left 2 places and you get from 10% to .10

Multiply .10 by 27 to get how much money to take off.

.10 x 27 = 2.70

Now, subtract 2.70 (which is your discount) from 27 and you get:

27 - 2.70 = 24.30

The second way you can do this is to multiply what you DO have to pay by 27. Since we're NOT going to pay the 10% since it's a discount, we'll be paying the other 90%. (100% - 10% = 90%) Let's do the same and turn 90% into a decimal, which is .90

Multiply .90 by 27 to get how much money you have to pay.

.90 x 27 = 24.30
