Answer:

On a very hot day, Douglass collapses from fatigue and likely heat exhaustion. Covey discovers him, and kicks him and hits him with a plank. He had blood pouring from his head and was struggling to walk. But he went to complain to Thomas Auld, his old master, about Covey and get help. However, while Auld is initially sympathetic, he says that Douglass must return to Covey. Douglass is allowed to stay overnight to heal a little bit before returning.
