Jack was out at a restaurant for dinner when the bill came. His dinner came to $14. He wanted to leave a 31% tip. How much was his meal plus the tip, before tax, in dollars and cents?

1) turn percent into decimal

=31 ÷
100

=0.31

2) multiply decimal by original cost to find how much to tip

=14 ×
0.31

=4.34

3) add costs together

=14+4.34

= $18.34
