The probability that a randomly selected student scores higher than 289 is 0.5

Using the parameters given for our Calculation;

  • mean , μ = 289
  • standard deviation , σ = 38

To obtain the probability of P(> 289) we first calculate the Zscore ;

  • Zscore = (Score - mean) / standard deviation

Zscore for a score of 289 ;

Zscore = (289- 289) / 38 = 0

Using a normal distribution table or calculator;

P(Z > 0) = 0.5

Therefore, the probability that a student scores higher than 289 is 0.5
