Data

• Each batch makes 12 pancakes.

,

• 3 batches for the brunch.

,

• Each batch needs 7/12 cups of milk

,

• Total milk: unknown

Procedure

To determine how much milk do we need for 3 batches, we have to add three times the cups needed for one batch as follows:

(7)/(12)+(7)/(12)+(7)/(12)

Wich can also be written as a multiplication:

3\cdot((7)/(12))

Solving either way:

0. Addition

(7)/(12)+(7)/(12)+(7)/(12)=(7+7+7)/(12)=(21)/(12)

2. Multiplication:

3\cdot((7)/(12))=(3\cdot7)/(12)=(21)/(12)

Finally, we can simplify the resulting fraction as the denominator and numerator are divisible by 3:

((21)/(3))/((12)/(3))=(7)/(4)

Answer: 7/4 cups
