Why were the postwar problems more severe in the south than in the north.

Assuming your talking about the American Civil war it is because their way of life had just been changed drastically.

In the south nearly their entire economy was held up off the backs of slaves and after the war the north made sure that this wasn't the case. Even after the war they're was still a lot of division amongst the country even if they were now officially a unified front. The north did not have to 'adapt' to not being dependent upon slaves because they already were not which is why the problems in the south were so much more severe.
