C) The advantage of using volunteers in the study is that volunteers will be more interested in the research work than non-volunteers, and they are believed to have a better memory (Intelligence Quotient). Therefore, they are belived to perform bettter in the research experiment.

D) Two controlled variables in this experiment are:

1) The ages of the volunteers

Difference in volunteers' ages can alter the result of the experiment. The outcome of the experiment, if age is not controlled, can be as a result in the difference in ages rather than the effect of the pills, which is not desirable.

2) The health of the volunteers

It should be ensured that the volunteers are equally healthy. If any of the volunteers is not healthy, it may affect the result of his/her tests before or after taking the pills, and this may be misinterpreted as the effect of the pills.
