The mu-opioid receptor (MOR) is a type of opioid receptor found primarily in the central nervous system.

What is it about?

When activated by endogenous opioid peptides (such as endorphins) or exogenous opioid drugs (such as morphine), the mu-opioid receptor can mediate various physiological effects.

Activation of mu-opioid receptors inhibits the transmission of pain signals in the spinal cord and brain, leading to analgesia or pain relief. Mu-opioid receptors are present in the brainstem, which controls respiratory function. Activation of these receptors can lead to a decrease in respiratory rate, and in overdose situations, this can be dangerous.
