An organic chemistry student prepared 181 mL of a DMSO Water solution at 25.0 Celsius by measuring out 79.2 mL of DMSO and 95.0 mL of water and mixing them. Calculate the volume percentage of DMSO in the solution. Be sure your answer has the right number of significant digits? %(v/v)

The percentage by volume is a way of quantitatively expressing a solution. This percentage indicates the volume of solute per volume of solution of a solution at a given temperature.

The expression used to calculate the percentage by volume is: % (v/v) = (volume of solute) / (volume of solution) x 100.

Here the solute is DMSO. The solution is DMSO + Water.

So volume of the solute (DMSO) = 79.2 mL

Volume of the solution (DMSO + Water) = 79.2 + 95.0 = 174.2 mL

% (v/v) = (79.2/174.2) x 100

% (v/v) = 45.5 %

Answer: 45.5 % (v/v)
