Seiji and Gavin both worked hard over the summer. Together they earned a total of $425. Gavin earned $25 more than Seiji.

(a) Write a system of equations for the situation. Use s for the amount Seiji earned and g for the amount Gavin earned.
(b) Graph the equations in the system.
(c) Use your graph to estimate how much each person earned.

The system of equations are:

  • s + g = 425 --- (1)
  • g = s + 25 --- (2)

Each person made 200 and 225

How to get the amount that each person made

to do this, put equation 2 into euation 1

s + (s + 25) = 425

2s = 400

divide through the equation

s = $200

Next you put the value of 's' in equation (2).

g = 200 + 25

g = $225
