The resulting solution will have the following composition:
- Aminosyn 5% (125 mL)
- Dextrose 15% (375 mL)
- KCl 8 mEq (2 mL)
- Ca Gluconate 2 mEq (0.25 mL)
- Ped MVI 2.5 mL
How to prepare TPN solution?
To prepare the TPN solution using the available stock:
Ingredients:
Aminosyn 17%
Dextrose 50%
KCl 4 mEq/mL
Ca Gluconate 8.0 mEq/mL
Ped MVI 10 mL
Calculations:
Aminosyn:
Need 125 mL of Aminosyn 5% in the final solution. To prepare this using Aminosyn 17%, use the following formula:
Volume of Aminosyn 17% = (Desired volume of Aminosyn 5%) × (5% / 17%)
Volume of Aminosyn 17% = (125 mL) × (5% / 17%)
≈ 35.3 mL
Dextrose:
Need 375 mL of Dextrose 15% in the final solution. To prepare this using Dextrose 50%, we can use the following formula:
Volume of Dextrose 50% = (Desired volume of Dextrose 15%) × (15% / 50%)
Volume of Dextrose 50% = (375 mL) × (15% / 50%)
≈ 112.5 mL
KCl:
Need 8 mEq of KCl in the final solution. To prepare this using KCl 4 mEq/mL, use the following formula:
Volume of KCl 4 mEq/mL = (Desired amount of KCl in mEq) / (Concentration of KCl in mEq/mL)
Volume of KCl 4 mEq/mL = (8 mEq) / (4 mEq/mL) = 2 mL
Ca Gluconate:
Need 2 mEq of Ca Gluconate in the final solution. To prepare this using Ca Gluconate 8.0 mEq/mL, we can use the following formula:
Volume of Ca Gluconate 8.0 mEq/mL = (Desired amount of Ca Gluconate in mEq) / (Concentration of Ca Gluconate in mEq/mL)
Volume of Ca Gluconate 8.0 mEq/mL = (2 mEq) / (8.0 mEq/mL) = 0.25 mL
Ped MVI:
Need 2.5 mL of Ped MVI in the final solution. Since there is Ped MVI 10 mL available, use 0.25 mL.
Preparation:
Measure 35.3 mL of Aminosyn 17%.
Measure 112.5 mL of Dextrose 50%.
Measure 2 mL of KCl 4 mEq/mL.
Measure 0.25 mL of Ca Gluconate 8.0 mEq/mL.
Measure 0.25 mL of Ped MVI 10 mL.
Combine all the ingredients in a sterile container and mix thoroughly.
The resulting solution will have the following composition:
Aminosyn 5% (125 mL)
Dextrose 15% (375 mL)
KCl 8 mEq (2 mL)
Ca Gluconate 2 mEq (0.25 mL)
Ped MVI 2.5 mL
