You often go to school by bus. You have two bus systems you could take. City Bus offers a monthly pass that costs $15 and then you pay $1 per ride. Campus Transport simply charges $2.50 per ride and does not require a monthly pass. After how many rides will the total costs of the two options be the same? Write a system of equations in order to solve this problem.

Answer:

For City Bus you will need to ride 10 times for 2 months, and for Campus Transport you need to ride 16 times.

Explanation:

$2.50 x 2 = $5.00 so you know that the number of rides needs to even in order to have a whole number. This is because there is no way the City Bus cost will ever have cents.

$2.50 x 16 = $40.00

$15 x 2 = $30

$1 x 10 = $10

$30 + $10 = $40

So (15 x 2) + (10 x 1) = 16 x 2.50
