What happens when photons strike the surface of a metal? Why does this happen?

We know that when protons strike the surfaca of a metal, this increases its temperature. This happens because the protons carry energy and this is imparted in the metal surface; some of these protons manage to hit the electrons of some of the atoms and thus, also a small current is created.
