HELP ENGLISH PASSAGE AND QUESTIONS, THIS IS A PART OF THE PASSAGE REST ARE IN THE OOO FILE:
Questions 7–19 are based on the following passages.
The following passages discuss the topic of intuition. The first was written by an American essayist in 2007. The second is an excerpt from a
book written by a research psychologist in 2002.
PASSAGE 1
According to a spate of recent popular books,
your faculty of intuition is an untapped source
of boundless power. You can access the ageless
wisdom of the universe, they claim, by simply
attuning yourself to the many non-rational
frequencies of information that envelop you.
To get an edge on your competition, learn to
listen to your gut.
Recent scientific research, however,
sheds a less sanguine and more cautionary
light on the power of irrationality. Studies
from such diverse fields as neurobiology,
evolutionary psychology, and economics
suggest that what we call intuition is in fact
the encroachment upon awareness of many
ancient systems of unconscious processing.
The often inchoate thoughts from our
unconscious are usually adorned by our
rational minds with a veneer of reason and
meaning, but they emanate from neural
systems better suited to our ancient ancestors than to modern humans. Trust them at
your own peril, and only if you value the
hunter-gatherer within you.
In order to survive and reproduce, our
ancestors often needed to process stimuli
quickly. When being chased by bears, they did
not have the luxury of researching the behavior
of omnivores in order to make the optimal
evasive maneuver.
