Once, when Hughes was in seventh grade, he got in trouble. In 1914, when his seventh-grade teacher moved him and the other African-American students into a separate row in class, he got angry. So he put cards that read “JIM CROW ROW” on the black kids’ desks.

why do you think Hughes put cards on the black kids’ desks that said “Jim Crow Row?”

The Jim Crow Row references the Jim Crow Laws, the laws kept African-Americans and Americans segregated, and since they were in a row alone separated from everyone else, he referenced being segregated from Americans, because of how he and his other classmates looked. Jim Crow refers to the Jim Crow laws. The Jim Crow laws made it so blacks could not eat at restaurants with whites, drink from the white water fountain or even use the segregated bathrooms. I would think that the row is the row of seats that the blacks had to sit in
