A student worked 53 hr during a week one summer. The student earned $5.30 per hour for the first 40 hr and $7.95 per hour for overtime How much did the student earn during the week?

Since the student worked 53 hours, and for the first 40 hours he gets paid normally, then we have that the difference between 53 and 40 is the hours that he worked overtime, then, 53 -40 = 13 hours he workd overtime. Thus, we can separate the total time like this:


\begin{gathered} 40\text{ hours of normal time} \\ 13\text{ hours of overtime} \end{gathered}

then, for the first 40 hours the student earned the following:


40(5.30)=212

then, for the overtime we have:


13(7.95)=103.35

adding these two quantities we get:


212+103.35=315.35

therefore, the student earned $315.35 during the week
