Final answer:

The faster bus travels at a speed of 60 mph.

Step-by-step explanation:

To find the speed of the faster bus, we can set up a proportion using their travel times. Let's say the slower bus travels at a speed of x mph. Since the faster bus travels 3 times as fast, it will travel at a speed of 3x mph.

After 5 hours, the slower bus will have traveled a distance of 5x miles, and the faster bus will have traveled a distance of 15x miles (3 times the distance).

Since the two buses are traveling in opposite directions, their total distance apart after 5 hours will be the sum of their distances:

5x + 15x = 400

20x = 400

x = 20

Therefore, the slower bus travels at a speed of 20 mph and the faster bus travels at a speed of 60 mph.
