Uncle Carlos and Abbey explain that Tony may have inherited a mutant gene for Factor VIII and this may be causing his nosebleeds. Tony is concerned. He asks, "Am |a mutant? What is a gene? How can a gene cause nosebleeds?" Abbey is studying to be a nurse and has just learned about DNA, genes, and gene expression.A gene is a segment of DNA that provides the instructions for making a protein. Different versions of a gene can result in different versions of the protein. Differentversions of the protein can result in different characteristics. This chart shows how different versions of the gene for the clotting protein, Factor VIII, can result in normalhealth or hemophilia. I need help answering these question.

Assuming that tony does not know about genetics, we should explain it in a simple and easy way.

One option could be the following:

1. The genes inside of us hold the information that will define who we are physically.

2. Sometimes there are different versions of a single gene, some of which are defective.

3. In your case Tony, you have the defective version that causes the disease hemophilia.
