Your teacher has a bag of candy. She gives you 2/3 of the candy in the bag, and your friend 1/8 of it. How much more candy than your friend did you get?

Answer: 13/24

Explanation:

Since the teacher gives me 2/3 of the candy in the bag, and gives my friend 1/8 of it, the amount of candy that I got more than my friend will be gotten by subtracting 1/8 from 2/3. This will be:

= 2/3 - 1/8

The lowest common multiple of 3 and 8 is 24, therefore we can change the numerator if the fractions toma common base.

= 2/3 - 1/8

= 16/24 - 3/24

= 13/24
