A park has a ________________ meter tall tetherball pole and a _____________ meter tall flagpole. The lengths of their shadows are proportional to their heights. Which of the following could be the lengths of the shadows?

Choose 2 answers:

a. Tetherball pole shadow: 1.35m Flagpole shadow: 3.4m
b. Tetherball pole shadow: 1.8m Flagpole shadow: 4.08m
c. Tetherball pole shadow: 3.75m Flagpole shadow: 8.35m
d. Tetherball pole shadow: 0.6m Flagpole shadow: 1.36m
e. Tetherball pole shadow:2m Flagpole shadow: 4.8m

It is to be noted that the length of the shadows could be Options B and Option D:

B) Tetherball pole shadow: 1.8m Flagpole shadow: 4.08m

D) Tetherball pole shadow: 0.6m Flagpole shadow: 1.36m

The relationship between height and shadow length is one of direct proportionality.

That is, the longer the shadow, the greater the height, and vice versa. The height-to-shadow-length ratio is constant.

As a result, if x and y are the lengths of the shadows cast by the tether ball pole and flagpole, respectively,

6.8/y = 3/x

y = (6.8/3)x

When x = 1.35 m

y =( 6.8/3) * 1.35 = 3.06 m

When x = 1.8 m

y = (6.8/3) * 1.8 = 4.08 m

When x= 3.75 m

y = (6.8/3) * 3.75 = 8.5 m

When x = 0.6

y = (6.8/3) * 0.6 = 1.36 m

When x = 2

y = (6.8/3) *2 = 4.533 m

Therefore, it is true that B and D are the true answers.
