Identifying Dependents and Indenpendts Variables

1) Examining the function y=45 +12x

• The input of a function is the, independent, variable

Because it depends on the value of the x, that's why you can freely choose the values you plug into for x.

• The ,output, of a function is the dependent variable.

In other words, the value of y always depends on what you plug into x.

• If x=3, y = 45 +12(3) ⇒ y = ,81

• If x = -4 y = 45+12(-4) ⇒ y = ,-3

• The value of y depends on the ,value of x

So we can conclude that:

• Independent variable: ,x

• Dependent Variable: ,y
