Two​ trains, Train A and Train​ B, weigh a total of 196 tons. Train A is heavier than Train B. The difference of their weights is 26 tons. What is the weight of each​ train?

Answer:

a. A = 111 tons

b. B = 85 tons.

Explanation:

Let the weight of the heavier train be A.

Let the weight of the other train be B.

Translating the word problem into an algebraic equation, we have;

A + B = 196 tons .......equation 1

A - B = 26 .......equation 2

A = 26 + B .........equation 3

Substituting eqn 3 into eqn 1, we have;

26 + B + B = 196

2B = 196 - 26

2B = 170

B = 85 tons.

To find A, using eqn 3;

A = 26 + B

A = 26 + 85

A = 111 tons
