Given that a = ( − 6 7 ) and b = ( − 1 − 3 ) . If a − b = ( x y ) , work out the values of x and y .

x = -5 , y = 10

Explanation:

As given ,

a = ( x₁ , y₁ ) = ( -6, 7)

b = ( x₂ , y₂ ) = (-1, -3)

For a -b = ( x₁ - x₂ , y₁ - y₂ )

= ( -6 - (-1) , 7 - (-3) )

= ( -6 + 1 , 7 + 3 )

= ( -5 , 10 )

⇒ a - b = ( -5, 10 ) = ( x, y)

∴ we get

x = -5 , y = 10
