For example, Immanuel Kant, a philosopher we studied in Topic 1, had a Kantian approach to metaphysics which focused on the nature of knowledge and the limits of human understanding. He believed in the existence of a priori synthetic knowledge, which means that certain truths can be known without relying on empirical observation. In terms of the philosophy of mind, Kant emphasized that the mind actively structures and organizes our perceptual experiences.
John Stuart Mill, who we examined in Topic 3, had a utilitarian perspective on ethics. Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory that focuses on maximizing overall happiness or well-being. Mill argued that actions should be evaluated based on their consequences and the amount of happiness they generate for the greatest number of people. He also emphasized the importance of individual freedoms and rights.
One difference between Kant and Mill's views is their approach to ethics. While Kant focused on the inherent moral worth of actions and the importance of following moral duties, Mill prioritized the outcomes or consequences of actions. Additionally, Kant's metaphysics placed a strong emphasis on reason and the limitations of human understanding, whereas Mill's focus was more on individual happiness and well-being.
