1) To solve for x, is to leave the x on the left side the other variables on the right along with the constants, like this


\begin{gathered} 5\text{ +kx =17} \\ kx\text{ =17-5} \\ x=(17-5)/(k) \end{gathered}

Note that, we subtracted 5 and then divided by x.
