let the width be w , then length = 2w - 1 ( 1 less than twice the width )

the perimeter (P) of a rectangle is calculated as

P = 2( length + width)

given P = 40 , then

40 = 2(2w - 1 + w)

40 = 2(3w - 1) ← divide both sides by 2

20 = 3w - 1 ( add 1 to both sides )

21 = 3w ( divide both sides by 3 )

7 = w

Then width of rectangle is 7 m
