The total valence electrons of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are counted to determine the Lewis structure of 2-butanol, with carbon as the center atom.
Single bonds bind the carbon atoms into a chain, and hydrogen atoms attach to the carbon atoms. A carbon atom and one oxygen atom are single-bonded. The remaining electrons fulfill the octet rule for hydrogen and oxygen and the octet rule for carbon.
