let the dimensions of x be a×b. we know that a+b=16, area ab.

compare that to y. the dimensions are (a+4)×(b-2)

finding the area of y, we get ab-2a+4b-8=ab

so 4b-2a=8 and use a+b=16 -> 2a+2b=32,

we sum the equations to get 6b=40 -> b=20/3, a=28/3.

thus, their total area is 2ab=1120/9
