Explanation:

When factorising quadratics, always try to get the x^2 by itself if possible. To do this, divide each term in the equation by 4, taking it outside of the brackets. Hence:
y = 4x^2 + 52x - 56

y = 4(x^2 + 13x - 14)

Now we can factorise by finding two numbers which add to 13 and multiply to -14, with the four remaining outside. Hence:

y = 4(x + 14)(x - 1)
