As you may already know, the number (the base) to the power (the exponent) is how many times you multiply the base. For instance:
3² = 3 * 3
3³ = 3 * 3 * 3
However, anything to the zeroth power is 1.
Why?
Well, for those above examples, take 3², you can also write it as:
3² = 1 * 3 * 3
It's just 1 times how many of that number. In 3 squared, there are twos 3's, not to be confused with 3 * 2.
In 3 to the zeroth power, there are zero 3's:
3° = 1
Now it has only the one.
This is just the way I was taught to think about it, but I'm sure there's a better explanation than mine.
