The width of a human hair is about 0.002 inches, which can be written as 2x10^n inches. What is n?

Writing in scientific notation, (which is the a × 10^n form) is like simplifying the decimal places. Hence, to work out what we need to raise 10 to, we need to work out how many places the decimal place has been moved, and in what direction.

0.002 → 00.02 → 000.2 → 0002.0

Hence, we can see to get to 2, the decimal place has been moved 3 places to the right. This means the 10 will be raised to a power of three.

Because we are making a small number bigger by doing this, the number that 10 is raised to must be negative. Hence:

0.002 = 2×10^-3
