Simon is unable to express his thoughts in Lord of the Flies chapter 7 because he is different from the other boys and they do not understand him. Simon is a visionary and a mystic who has a deeper insight into the nature of the beast and the evil within humans. He discovers the truth about the beast when he encounters the Lord of the Flies, a sow’s head on a stake that speaks to him in a hallucination. The Lord of the Flies tells Simon that the beast is not a real creature, but the savagery and darkness that lurks inside each boy1.
However, Simon cannot share his revelation with the other boys because they are not ready to accept or comprehend it. They are too caught up in their fear, violence, and tribalism. When Simon tries to tell them that the beast is only a dead parachutist, they mistake him for the beast and kill him in a frenzy. Simon’s death symbolizes the loss of innocence and the triumph of evil on the island2.
