Tallulah plans to repaint some classroom bookcases. All of the bookcases are the same size and each requires start fraction, 3, divided by, 5, end fraction 5 3 ​ gallon of paint. If she's going to paint 13 bookcases, how many gallons of paint does she need? Express your answer in simplest form.

7 and 4/5 gallons of paint

Explanation:

Lets interpret the question statement:

"each requires start fraction, 3, divided by, 5, end fraction 5 3 ​ gallon of paint"

as (3/5) gallon of paint per bookcase, or: (3/5) gal/bc, where bc is bookcase.

Tallulah plans on painting 13 bc (bookcases). We have a conversion factor, (3/5) gal/bc, that we can use:

(13 bc)*(3/5 gal/bc) = (39/5) gal

The bc unit cancels, leaving only gallons.

(39/5) is the same as 7 and 4/5 gallons of paint
