Answer and Explanation:

Two women initially share $3000.

a)

We can represent how much they both spend on menstrual products with the equation:

amount spent = 2 × 3(56 + 78 + 2 + 1)

= 2 × $3(137)

= 2 × $411

= $822

So, they end up with $3000 - $822 = $2178 left.

b)

One woman's husband mandates that the women return $25 worth of products, so they then have:

$2178 + $25 = $2203

c)

Both women crave chips, which are $243 per bag. Each woman buys 4. This costs:

cost of chips = 2 × 4($243)

= 2 × $972

= $1944

So, they end up with $3000 - $1944 = $1056 left (i.e. not in debt).

d)

The husbands buy the women a $1240 gift card, so the amount that is left is:

$1056 - $1240 = -$184

Finally, the couples are in debt, as they have a negative balance.

e)

Spending money once already in debt just makes the balance more negative, and thus, it puts them in even more debt.
