In what ways did Indigenous people adapt to or change their environments in order to support their societies?

They used their environments to their advantage. For example, a society based by a river would mainly eat fish or other crustaceans because that was what was abundant in the area. Not only did it provide food and drinking water, but it also helped make the soil more soft and fertile which helped with agriculture.
