Following World War II, the recommendation to divide Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state, with the holy city of Jerusalem becoming an international city, was made by the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP). UNSCOP was established by the United Nations in 1947 to recommend a solution for the future of Palestine. Their proposal laid the groundwork for the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, which was passed on November 29, 1947, and led to the partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states.
