The church did not burn Luther's books, but they ordered for them to be burned in public. They also threatened to excommunicate anyone who read, owned, or published his books. This meant that they would be kicked out of the Catholic Church. The punishment for heresy, which is going against the teachings of the church, was burning at the stake.
