A chef is going to use a mixture of two brands of Italian dressing. The first brand contains 8% vinegar, and the second brand contains 12% vinegar. The chef wants to make 300 milliliters of a dressing that is 11% vinegar. How much of each brand should she use?

Let x = the brand of dressing with 8% vinegar

Let y = the brand of dressing with 13% vinegar

x + y = 280 x = 280 - y

.08x + .13y = .11(280) = 30.8 Multiply this equation by 100 to get rid of the decimal points.

8x + 13y = 3080

8(280 - y) + 13y = 3080

2240 - 8y + 13y = 3080

5y = 840

y = 168 ml

x = 280 - y = 280 - 168

x = 112 ml
